Montana's Wilson to play after murder acquittal

NCAA Football Betting Lines

07/12/2010 - Missoula, MT (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jimmy Wilson plans to rejoin the University of Montana football team after the NCAA granted him another year of athletic eligibility following his acquittal on murder charges.

Wilson was tried in Southern California for the June 2007 shooting death of his aunt's boyfriend and jailed for two years, but was acquitted last July.

The 23-year-old, a three-year starter for Montana at cornerback from 2004 to 2006, asked the Big Sky Conference school to petition the NCAA to restore his senior season, which the NCAA did late last week. The step was necessary because the NCAA's five-year clock rule for Wilson to play four seasons expired following the 2008 season.

Wilson contended in his trial that he acted in self-defense. An original jury trial in 2006 ended with a hung jury.

"I thank God for the opportunity to further my education," Wilson said in a UM news release. "I am thankful to the coaches and Jean (Gee, UM associate athletic director) for helping me with the waiver process. I am excited I have the chance to compete again in the classroom and on the field as a Grizzly."

"The NCAA has ruled in favor of Jimmy, and we support the decision," UM athletic director Jim O'Day said. "This will allow this young man to restore what he's been missing the past three years and follow his dreams both academically and athletically. The university is all about opportunity and second chances, and we are treating this matter no differently than we would for any student-athlete, whether from Montana or California. We will welcome Jimmy back into the Griz family with open arms and wish him success."

MySportsbook.com Posts Heisman Trophy Odds

With 3,919 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and a mere seven interceptions last season, combined with a powerful South Bend Heisman legacy, odds makers at MySportsbook.com have given Notre Dame senior quarterback Brady Quinn the best Heisman Trophy odds at 5-2.

Quinn isn’t the only big man on campus this season.  Oklahoma junior running back and 2004 Heisman runner-up Adrian Peterson, listed at 7-2, rushed for a combined 3,033 yards in his first two years as a college player and will give Quinn a run for his money.

This online sportsbook has also listed Troy Smith, Ohio State senior quarterback, as another strong favorite to win the 72nd Heisman Trophy.  A 7-1 bet, Smith threw for 2,282 yards last season and also led the Buckeyes to a convincing 34-20 victory over Quinn and the Fighting Irish in last season’s Fiesta Bowl.
